What is being called a 'blue flash' then an explosion rocked Canadian skies tonight, causing residents across Quebec great alarm. While some said it felt like a short earthquake, others called it an explosion though many saw a 'bright blue flash' across the skies followed by the 'boom'! What was that boom? We sure have been hearing about an awful lot of meteors lately...

Hudson and St-Lazare were rocked briefly by the sound of an explosion around 8 p.m. Tuesday, but the source of the big boom remains a mystery.

Officials in the Off-Island towns, as well as the Surêté du Québec, were flummoxed, leaving residents who heard the noise to wonder on Twitter what happened.

“No one seems to know what it is exactly but a friend described it as bright blue flash in the sky followed by the sound,” wrote Kalina Laframboise.

“Felt like an explosion, or a ‘short’ earthquake,” commented Faith MacLeod on Off Island Gazette’s Facebook page. “Stepped outside and neighbours were out wondering what it was.”

“We heard it, and felt it,” said Nancy Lannon-Doyle of St-Lazare. “My entire house shook.”

“It’s been heard all of the region but no details,” wrote Greg Patterson. “My opinion is that it was a meteor hitting the atmosphere with sonic boom.”
