If you’ve had chicken pox as a child, then you’re still carrying the herpes zoster virus in your body, which can become reactivated after many years causing a very painful, burning rash known as shingles. The virus lives in the nerve cells and produces a rash along the nerve pathways, most often on one side or the other of the trunk of the body. Having had chicken pox does not create immunity to shingles; as a matter of fact, just the opposite is true, because the virus enters the body with the chicken pox. The Mayo Clinic declares there is no cure for shingles and discusses various conventional treatments that may relieve symptoms; however, many only suppress symptoms leaving the patient open to future attacks.
