Of all the propaganda stunts the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has created over the years to persecute Falun Gong, perhaps the most damaging is the self-immolation hoax. In January 2001, Chinese media broadcast footage of five people, supposedly Falun Gong practitioners, who set themselves on fire in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Within weeks the event was found to be a hoax, staged in order to create public support for the CCP’s mass imprisonment, torture, and killing of Falun Gong practitioners. It worked.
