Campaign group Republic has today called on the government to stop Prince Charles and other royals from influencing policy behind closed doors. Revelations from the BBC show the royals are not above politics but mired in it. Former ministers have admitted that the heir routinely interferes in controversial and divisive political issues. Republic’s CEO Graham Smith said today: “The monarchy is not above politics, it just keeps its politics hidden from public view. In a democracy that’s not ok – no matter what excuses ministers make for this behaviour.” “Charles and his aides have had numerous meetings with government ministers since the last election – we know this lobbying is carrying on.
