Video: Obamacare Creepy Uncle Sam Ad Scares Liberals

Yesterday, this video was forwarded to me. It is quite startling.

As the Mom of a teenager, I have taken time to educate myself on the increasing costs of Obamacare on young people in their twenties. As a result, I was interested in whatGeneration Opportunity had to say.

The group started a few years ago and includes young folks from all over the United States. They hadn’t done anything cutting edge or remarkable enough to get noticed until yesterday, when Creepy Uncle Sam went viral.

Why did they opt to run this controversial video?

Corie Whalen, who is on staff with Generation Opportunity, took some time to discuss this with me today. She told me that the group has definitely become more relevant and that changes in leadership have helped the group spread their message that less government intervention is better than alternatives suggested by President Obama.

“We think that those who wrote the Obamacare law are using young people as ‘cash cows’. We were seeking an intellectually honest way to talk to them about the fact that they can opt out if they want to preserve their ability to make choices rather than having government choose their health care for them.”

They sure got our attention as well as the liberal media. Just yesterday, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow trashed Generation Opportunity as a project of the Koch Brothers, saying that they were pushing the boundaries of creepiness and decency. Maddow says that such efforts are being funded to support Congressional Republican efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act.

Earlier today, the U.S. House voted to shut down the government to protect families from the costs of Obamacare. It won’t matter since the U.S. Senate intends to pass its own bill restoring government funding for day-to-day operations as well as Obamacare, but the vote in the lower House of Congress was a signal to working families that all may not be well.

It’s clear that liberals like Maddow, who believe Republicans in Congress are wasting their time found Creepy Uncle Sam effective. Like others in the liberal media, she over reacted.

In her blog yesterday, Maddow said “the right has pushed a morally bankrupt argument that seems ugly even by contemporary conservative standards.”

Maddow suggests that the ad reaches “a new level of stupidity” with the mantra that those who are conservative must be dumb.  Generation Opportunity’s Whalen had a different point of view –

“The liberals say this is being funded by the same people who want to put government into health care – conservatives who are pro-life.

It is dishonest of them to say that because our group wants government out of health care. We have people involved who are on all sides of the abortion issue. Liberals continue to use this issue to drive a wedge between women and it’s just plain wrong.

This is about young people making their own choices without having government interfere.”

If it sounds a little bit like the liberal chirping we heard during the Presidential cycle about the “War on Women”, you’ve guessed correctly.

Whalen went on to give a little background on the organization -

“Generation Opportunity was founded a few years ago. Our president, Evan Feinberg, ran for Congress in 2012. Many of our team have worked as community organizers in very grassroots capacities that favor solutions to problems and put young people in charge of their lives. We don’t like the idea of government telling us what to do.”

Whalen views Creepy Uncle Sam as a metaphor demonstrating the impact of the long arm of government standing in the way of you and your doctor, stating -

“I think most people who see the ad understand that this is about choices and government getting in the way.”

A companion website, called Opt-Out, talks about inequality, insecurity, and inconsistency for those young people who opt-in to Obamacare. The group has facts and cites works from the Wall Street Journal and other reliable sources to prove their points.

For example, fact sheets that can be found here suggest that premiums are slated to increase in most states by 169% for young people, aged 21 to 29.

“If an 18 year old male went into Obamacare today, he would be committed to a 17% excise tax over his lifetime. This is what President Obama and those on the left don’t want to talk about.”

What do you think? Is Creepy Uncle Sam a stunt? Will you share it with young people you know so they understand that they can “opt-out” of Obamacare and save money as a result?
