Obama’s Revenge? Top Secret Document Detailing Israel’s Nuke Program Released

The Obama administration declassified and quietly released a top-secret Pentagon report detailing Israel’s nuclear weapons capability to the public last month. The move came on the heels of the announcement that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be addressing a joint session of Congress regarding the threat posed by a nuclear Iran, causing some to speculate about the timing. The 386-page report from 1987 entitled Critical Technological Assessment in Israel and NATO detailed Israel’s nuclear weapons capabilities at that time, which were very sophisticated, along with our NATO allies’. Strangely, large portions of the document discussing NATO countries’ capabilities (including Germany, France, and Italy) have been redacted, while those sections addressing Israel’s capabilities have not. The Israeli news site Arutz Sheva notes that the report was released in response to a FOIA request made three years ago by American journalist and Israel critic Grant Smith. Smith, who heads the Institute for Research: Middle East Policy, believes this action by the United States government marks the first time it has ever publicly acknowledged Israel’s nuclear program. The Jewish state, unlike Iran, is not a signatory to the United Nation’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and therefore is not in violation of international law in maintaining a nuclear weapons arsenal.
