Hurricane Amanda has winds of 140mph as a strong Category 4 hurricane. Yesterday the storm was in the elite Category 5 status with winds of 155mph, rare for a hurricane and even more rare for any storm in the month of May. The hurricane is now the strongest hurricane ever in May in the Eastern Pacific and one the strongest worldwide so early in the hurricane season. The previous May record for the region was held by Hurricane Adolph in 2001 with winds of 143mph.
