WASHINGTON, D.C. (INTELLIHUB) — A document acquired and released by Edward Snowden details that the National Security Agency has been monitoring the general public’s online porn habits in an effort to exploit radicals possibly speaking out.

“The Director of the National Security Agency — described as “DIRNSA” — is listed as the “originator” of the document. Beyond the NSA itself, the listed recipients include officials with the Departments of Justice and Commerce and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

“Without discussing specific individuals, it should not be surprising that the US Government uses all of the lawful tools at our disposal to impede the efforts of valid terrorist targets who seek to harm the nation and radicalize others to violence,” Shawn Turner, director of public affairs for National Intelligence, told The Huffington Post in an email Tuesday.

Yet Jameel Jaffer, deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said these revelations give rise to serious concerns about abuse. “It’s important to remember that the NSA’s surveillance activities are anything but narrowly focused — the agency is collecting massive amounts of sensitive information about virtually everyone,” he said.”, reported the Huffington Post.[1]

Some wonder how far domestic surveillance really goes and if it’s even needed. After all more people die in-car accidents each year than terror attacks.

However proponents of increased security such as CNN’s Daniel Burke, have reported massive increases in terror attacks worldwide.

Burke wrote “As terrorism increasingly becomes a tactic of warfare, the number of attacks and fatalities soared to a record high in 2012, according to a new report obtained exclusively by CNN.

More than 8,500 terrorist attacks killed nearly 15,500 people last year as violence tore through Africa, Asia and the Middle East, according to the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.

That’s a 69% rise in attacks and an 89% jump in fatalities from 2011, said START, one of the world’s leading terrorism-trackers.”[2] While in the U.S. it would be a great stretch, one could rightfully argue the point on a worldwide scale.
