The verdict has come in, Pope Francis announced on May 1, 2013, and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) movement re-emerged sporting a rather enviable after-glow. One question scholars had been debating concerns how salient ethical principles are in undergirding CSR. Put another way, are the “rules” in CSR to be counted as morality, or alternatively as a certain degree of fit between two sets of social norms? Put another way, is CSR an application of philosophy or sociology?
