Damn the Torpedoes: U.S. Navy Approves Invisible Laser Weapon for USS Ponce

Wade Sims for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online The Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced Wednesday that it will be approving an experimental directed energy weapon on board the USS Ponce, currently deployed in the Persian Gulf. The 30 kilowatt “Laser Weapon System,” or LaWS for short, is part of a $40 million research program for directed energy weapons in combat operations and is the first to be officially deployed on a naval ship. “The captain of that ship has all of the authorities necessary if there was a threat inbound to that ship to protect our Sailors and Marines,” ONR Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, chief of naval research, said when speaking to USNI News.
