Be a Good Houseguest in a Foreign Country

If you visit friends or family in the United States, you probably understand how to be a considerate houseguest: You keep your sleeping area clean, don’t make a mess in the bathroom, offer to help prepare some of the meals, and leave when you say you will. If you have been invited to stay in a private home overseas, however, you might find that you’re not quite as sure about the general rules of etiquette. Every country differs a bit on what the natives find to be good guest behavior, so it’s always best to do some research on the cultural norms of the country that you plan on visiting. In general, though, here are some tips to keep in mind: Remember that eating times may differ from what you’re used to.
